Dog Days of Summer

Posted on

Summers are hot in Orlando … especially if you happen to be a black and tan, long haired miniature dachshund. Luckily for Millie, we found a great new way to keep cool while exercising and socializing with other dogs. Lina and I recently took Millie on her first trip to Fleet Peeples Dog Park on Lake Baldwin and we all really loved it!

It’s not a day at the dog park without a little bit of butt sniffing. As it turned out, a local dachshund meet up group was at the park at the same time we were. So there were a whole lot of wieners running around!

Millie has never been especially big on getting wet. Lately we’ve been trying to get her accustomed to cooling off with a summer swim but I don’t think she really likes doggy paddling – even though she’s good at it.

After getting her feet wet a little bit, I was able to coax Millie into deeper waters and as long as she was able to stay standing I don’t think she minded it too much.

I brought one of Millie’s toys in the hopes that she could get some extra exercise chasing her ball around the park. But with all of the excitement, and tons of other dogs, she wasn’t really interested.

We are still working on the whole “fetch” concept. Millie loves waiting for you to the throw the ball and will run after it, but then she gets distracted and you’re forced to go retrieve the ball yourself.

After a few minutes of playing in the lake, Millie was ready to head home – and she wasn’t shy about trying to tell us it was time to go.

A nice feature at the park is their dog washing station. It’s been very rainy in Central Florida lately so the park was particularly muddy. The water was a little cold but it did the trick.

I hope that eventually Millie will take it upon herself to run right up to the water and dive in. Or maybe chase a ball into the lake and swim back to shore. For now, we’re taking baby steps and starting with a little bit of splashing.

We’re hoping to make trips to the dog park a regular adventure and with such a great place for dogs to enjoy a day in the outdoors right around the corner – we’ve got no excuse not to!

Book Report: “Dog Handling” by Clare Naylor

Speaking of dogs … well, actually contrary to its title, this isn’t really a book about dogs. It’s about an accountant, or rather a former accountant, who learns a lesson in love from a friend who compares reeling in men to training a dog.

I’ve read a couple of Naylor’s books and they are all equally cute. This one goes from having it all, to losing it all, to getting something even better back. The characters are fun and relatable even if the story lines and destinations seem a little far fetched.

This book won’t change the world, or your way of thinking – unless you’re a single lady trying to figure out the dating game, in which case you may want to take notes. It is a fun and easy read though, and a great way to distract yourself from the busy working world and really get engrossed in a sweet story.

Just Dance!

Posted on

I’ve always loved dance. From twirling around the living room to dance camps and competitions it is something that I wish I did more of, not just because it’s fun and a great way to stay in shape but because sometimes dance can make you see things differently.

My lovely sorority sister Jamie introduced me to “So You Think You Can Dance” in our college days and I have been an avid viewer ever since. Brandon likes watching the beginning of the season when there are a ton of terrible dancers making fools of themselves on stage. For me, I watch every week waiting for a routine that catches my breath.

Every so often a performance hits all the right notes. The music, the dancers, the costumes: it all comes together. I put together a list of my Top 10 favorite routines (starting in Season 3, I didn’t really watch the first two seasons) and had a great time finding all the videos and watching the dances again!

In putting this post together I decided to let some of my fellow SYTYCD followers weigh in on some of their favorites:

Brandon’s Picks

Brandon regularly gets sucked into the show when I have it on and was eager to offer up the performances he likes best.

Season 7 – Alex & Twitch – “Outta Your Mind” (Lil Jon & LM*AO) – NappyTabs

Season 4 – Katee & Josh – “No Air” (Jordin Sparks) – NappyTabs

Season 4 – Kherington & Twitch – “Dreaming with a Broken Heart” (John Mayer) – Mia Michaels

Lina’s Picks

My sister Lina was especially excited to tell me her favorites. In fact, she sent me a very long list complete with the names of the songs and the dancers. Luckily, we have similar tastes so pretty much all of her picks ended up in this post somewhere.

Season 3 – Sabra & Neil – “Sweet Dreams” (Eurythmics) – Mandy Moore

Season 3 – Lacey & Danny – “Hip Hip Chin Chin” (Club Des Belugas) – Dmitry Chaplin

Season 8 – Caitlynn & Mitchell – “To Love You More” (Celine Dion) – Mandy Moore

Jamie’s Picks

Jamie’s all-time favorite performances both came from Season 4 and coincidently (or not, maybe) they both feature Mark Kanemura!

Season 4 – Mark & Chelsie – “Bleeding Love” (Leona Lewis) – NappyTabs

Season 4 – Mark & Courtney – “The Garden” (Mirah) – Sonya Tayeh

National Dance Day

Instead of a book report this week, I have a little bit of homework for you. The second annual National Dance Day is coming up on Saturday, July 30. It’s an initiative to get people off their butts and on to the dance floor. There are three routines they offer for dancers of all ages and skill sets so you have no excuse!

I’m trying to talk Lina into learning the master class routine by NappyTabs. If we end up going through with it I’ll be sure to post a video of our efforts … or at the very least a couple of pictures! Get up and start dancing, people!

A Day in the Life of a Dolphin

Posted on

How do you celebrate the Fourth of July? For most Americans, even mixed heritage residents like me, July 4 is a reminder of how lucky we are to live in the U.S. I like to spend the day not only enjoying the country I live in – but the state. And what better way to celebrate living in the Sunshine State than by soaking up some of the fabulous Florida sunshine at the beach?

Playing third wheel yet again to Benli (the newly married Ben and Alli Stout), we headed to Cocoa Beach to celebrate Independence Day as well as Ben’s birthday, which was July 1. We were joined by Will and Christie later in the afternoon, so if you’re keeping count that put me at fifth wheel.

Luckily, I made a friend in the form of an inflatable dolphin who kept me company and had a pretty good time meeting new people and frolicking along the beach.

The dolphin snuck a kiss from Mrs. Stout … don’t tell Ben!

In addition to sharing some love with all the ladies, the dolphin made a comfy seat on the beach.

Will took the dolphin out for one last ride among the waves before we left.

The dolphin and I spent a little time tanning our tummies.

It’s been a while since I’ve spent the day at the beach, but I’m glad I took the trip out. I got a nice tan out of it, spent the day with good friends and made a new one! I hope you are having a great summer so far and that you were able to celebrate the Fourth of July in a way that makes you proud to be an American!

Book Report: “Girls’ Night In” by Red Dress Ink

Here is a book that’s worth the cost. There are a lot of things I love about “Girls’ Night In.” My friend Sandra gave me the book when we were in college. It is actually a collection of short stories by a myriad of popular female writers including Jennifer Weiner, Sophie Kinsella and Marian Keyes, to name a few.

I like bringing this book with me to the beach because the shorter stories are easy to flip back and forth between and it is chock full of funny, light, chick lit stories perfect for a sunny, summery day. My favorite story is by Meg Cabot told through a series of laugh-out-loud office emails.

The best part of the book? It supports a great cause. Each of the writers submitted their stories for this book at no charge and all proceeds benefit War Child, a program that supports centers for abandoned and orphaned children in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The version on my bookshelf was given to me second hand, but there are a slew of other editions available online that I’m looking at buying!
